Raising Barns: Past, Present and Future

  • Hyde Hall 267 Glimmerglass State Park Cooperstown, NY, 13326 United States (map)

The Otsego 2000 Historic Preservation Series continues with a talk “Raising Barns: Past, Present and Future” at Hyde Hall, 267 Glimmerglass State Park Road, Cooperstown, NY. Dr. Cindy Falk will explore connections among agriculture, buildings, and the historic landscape of central New York and argue that old barns still matter in the 21st century, even when their historic uses have faded. We also will get a chance to visit the agricultural landscape at Hyde Hall, including the “new” barn, and we will discuss what resources are available for private individuals who own and care for barns today.

Dr. Falk is professor of material culture at the Cooperstown Graduate Program. She is the author of Barns of New York: Rural Architecture of the Empire State and served as co-editor of Buildings & Landscapes: The Journal of the Vernacular Architecture Forum for five years.

The talk is free, donations welcome. Please register in advance. Use Mill Road entrance to get to Hyde Hall, or pay the day use fee at the main Glimmerglass State Park entrance at 1527 County Road 31.
