Tom’s Charity Hike

On or about June 1, Tom Walsh, a cancer survivor and avid hiker, will begin a Charity Hike to raise funds for and awareness about Otsego Outdoors and the Bassett Cancer Institute. The funds will be split evenly between the two.

Tom Walsh, shown here on his Super Ultra Otsego Outdoors Winter Octet in Feb. 2021, is planning a 3-week continuous thru-hike of all the state parks and state forests in Otsego County to raise funds for the Bassett Cancer Institute and Otsego Outdoors.

Tom’s goal is to complete a continuous thru-hike to Otsego County’s 4 state parks and 21 state forests. He estimates it will take him three weeks. He will begin at his home in Worcester.

Otsego Outdoors, a collaborative program of Otsego 2000, Otsego Land Trust, and the Otsego County Conservation Association, connects people with year-round recreational opportunities in Otsego County and offers seasonal Otsego Octet challenges. Otsego Outdoors will use the funds raised for trail maintenance and improvements. In February 2021, Tom Walsh completed a Super Ultra Otsego Outdoors Winter Octet, finishing all 12 hikes (instead of just the required 8) in one day.

The funds raised for the Bassett Cancer Institute will be designated to benefit patient and family services.

This is the third Charity Hike Tom has done since he was declared cancer free in 2019. In 2020 he raised funds for Bassett Cancer Institute and the Tunnel to Towers Foundation; in 2021 he raised funds for Bassett ICU and the Tunnel to Towers Foundation.

“I always include Bassett,” said Tom. “They saved my life twice.”
